Reporting a Crime

This is not a fast-response system. ŬIf you need a faster response, you may come to any Fairfax County Police Station to file a non-emergency police report.

Your crime or incident must have occurred in Fairfax County. If the incident occurred in another jurisdiction you must file a report with their respective Police Department.

This online report is for insurance and Police information purposes only. Information obtained by this report assists in preventing future crimes by analyzing trends, locations and times of violations. It may also assist in the identification and return of stolen property recovered as the result of other investigations.

If you are aware of the identity of the suspect, you may only use this online report if you do not wish to pursue criminal prosecution.

You cannot use this online form to report:

  • Any incident that occurred in the past 30 minutes.
  • Any type of violent crime (whether completed or attempted), including, but not limited to: assault, kidnapping, robbery.
  • Any type of sex crime (whether completed or attempted), including, but not limited to: rape or sexual assault.
  • Any theft or loss of a firearm.
  • Any type of stolen vehicle (whether completed or attempted), including, but not limited to: cars, trucks, trailers, motorcycles.
  • Any type of stolen license plate.
  • Any incident (whether completed or attempted) involving breaking and entering of your home or business.
  • Any type of traffic accident, including a hit and run, whether or not an injury occurred.
  • Any crimes committed against a person due to their race, religion, ethnic or national origin, disability and/or sexual orientation.

You can use this on-line form to report:

If you request a case number, one will be provided to you for your records and insurance purposes. Your report will normally be processed within 72 hours. Actual police reports are confidential and are not released; a verification letter regarding your report may be obtained through Central Records at 703-246-2272.

Certain user information is recorded in order to aid in the prosecution of false police reports.

Be advised that it is a crime to make a false police report. Anyone found to have submitted a false police report will be prosecuted under the authority of Virginia State Code, Section 18.2-461, which shall be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor. Maximum possible penalty is one year in jail and/or $2500 fine.
